Stair Lift Installation in Austin & Central Texas

A stair lift — also called a stair chair lift — is a motorized seat that travels along a rail mounted to your staircase, carrying you safely between floors. Live Oak Home Access installs straight stairlifts, curved stairlifts, and outdoor stair lifts across the Austin metro, Hill Country, and Central Texas — with a free in-home assessment, fixed-price quote, and battery backup included on every job.

Your stairs shouldn't keep you from the bedroom, laundry room, or any part of your home. A stair lift is one of the most reliable ways to stay safely in the house you love — without major construction, without moving, and without giving up your independence.

Signs a stair lift might be right for you or your parent

Stairs become harder to navigate gradually — and then, sometimes suddenly. Many families start thinking about a stair lift for home after one of these moments:

  • A fall on the stairs, or a near-miss that shook everyone's confidence
  • Surgery or a new diagnosis — hip replacement, knee surgery, stroke recovery, or a Parkinson's diagnosis that affects balance and leg strength
  • Shortness of breath from a heart or lung condition that makes climbing stairs exhausting
  • A walker or wheelchair that makes the stairs an obstacle rather than a passage
  • Sleeping on the couch because getting to the upstairs bedroom has become too risky
  • A caregiver's concern — when adult children or a home health aide worry about a parent doing stairs alone
  • A loved one insisting "I'm fine" when the evidence says otherwise

You don't have to wait for a fall. The best time to install a stair lift is before a crisis, when you can take the time to choose the right model and have it installed calmly.

If any of the situations above sound familiar, a stair lift is worth a conversation. Our CAPS-certified team brings occupational-therapist-informed thinking to every assessment — we don't just measure the staircase, we look at your whole situation and recommend only what you actually need.

Sometimes a stair lift is the answer. Sometimes a small bathroom remodel or grab bars downstairs makes more sense. We will always tell you the truth.

Stair lift types and options we install

We work with leading manufacturers to offer models that fit a wide range of staircase configurations, weight capacities, and budgets. During your free assessment we will recommend the specific model that suits your home.

Straight stairlifts

The most common installation — a single rail runs the full length of a straight staircase from bottom to top. Straight stair lift models install quickly (usually three to five hours) and represent the most affordable option. If your staircase goes straight up without a turn or landing, this is likely your best choice.

Most popular option

Curved & L-shaped stairlifts

Staircases with a bend, turn, or landing require a curved stairlift with a custom-fabricated rail. The rail is built to match the exact path of your stairs, so the lift glides smoothly around every corner. Curved stairlift installation takes a full day and requires precise measurement — we handle all of it.

Custom-built to your staircase

Outdoor stair lifts

Covered-porch steps, side-yard stairs, and exterior garage steps can all be fitted with an outdoor stair lift rated to handle Central Texas heat, humidity, and the occasional bout of rain. Outdoor models include weatherized covers and UV-resistant components. We assess the grade, surface, and weather exposure to choose the right unit.

Rent or buy — your choice

Not every situation calls for a permanent purchase. If you need a stair lift for post-surgery recovery or want to try one before committing, short-term rental and rent-to-own arrangements are available. We walk you through both options honestly — there is no pressure to buy if renting makes more sense for your circumstances.

Flexible options available

Wondering whether a stair lift or a home elevator is the better long-term fit? Our guide Stair Lift vs. Home Elevator — Which is Right for Your Central Texas Home? walks through the key differences in cost, space, and long-term value. For situations where a stair lift won't work, we also install residential elevators and platform lifts.

How our stair lift installation process works

From the first phone call to the day you ride the lift for the first time, we keep the process clear, calm, and fully managed. Here is what to expect.

  1. 1

    Free in-home assessment

One of our CAPS-certified specialists comes to your home at a time that works for you. We measure every dimension of your staircase, assess the rail path, evaluate your electrical setup, and talk through your goals and concerns. We also take the time to understand how you use your home so we recommend the right solution — not just any solution. There is no cost and no obligation.

  2. 2

    Fixed quote — no surprises

After the assessment, you receive a written, fixed-price quote. The price you approve is the price you pay. We do not add charges on installation day. For curved stairlifts, we specify the rail fabrication timeline so you know exactly when to expect installation.

  3. 3

    Clean, professional installation

Our installers protect your floors and finishes before a single tool comes out. For straight stairlifts, we typically complete installation in three to five hours. Curved models take a full day. The rail attaches to the stair treads — not to the wall — so your walls stay untouched. We test every safety feature before we pack up.

  4. 4

Full training for you and your family

We walk you — and any family member or caregiver who will be present — through every control, every safety feature, and every fold-up function before we leave. You ride the lift yourself, ask all your questions, and feel fully confident. We also leave written instructions behind.

  5. 5

    Complete cleanup

We remove all packaging, clean up every bit of debris, and leave your home exactly as we found it — except for the stair lift that wasn't there before. We protect floors throughout and do a final walkthrough with you before leaving.

  6. 6

    Workmanship warranty & ongoing service

Every installation comes with a written workmanship warranty. Manufacturer warranties cover the lift unit itself. If you ever have a question, need a service visit, or want to discuss an additional modification, we are a phone call away — the same local team that installed your lift.

Funding help: VA HISA, Medicaid, and more

The cost of a stair lift can sometimes be offset by assistance programs. Here is an honest overview of what may be available:

  • Original Medicare generally does not cover stair lifts as durable medical equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited home-safety benefits — check your specific plan's Evidence of Coverage document.
  • VA HISA grant (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) helps eligible veterans pay for medically necessary home modifications. Contact your VA social worker or visit VA.gov to verify current award amounts and eligibility requirements.
  • Texas Medicaid STAR+PLUS HCBS waiver may cover Minor Home Modifications for eligible Medicaid members. Eligibility and covered services vary — contact your service coordinator to verify current program details.
  • Older Americans Act (AAA) — local Area Agencies on Aging sometimes administer home modification assistance. Contact the Capital Area AAA if you are in the Austin metro, or your county's AAA for Hill Country areas.
  • Home equity and financing — we can discuss payment and financing options that may work for your situation.

We help clients gather and organize paperwork for funding applications. This is not medical, legal, or financial advice — please verify current program details and eligibility with the relevant agency.

Residential Elevators & Platform Lifts

When a stair lift won't work — multi-story homes, very narrow staircases, wheelchair users who cannot transfer to a seat — a residential elevator or vertical platform lift may be the right alternative. We install both.

Accessible Bathroom Remodel

Getting upstairs safely is only part of the picture. We often combine stair lift installation with a master bath remodel — curbless shower, grab bars, and comfort-height fixtures — so the whole upstairs works safely for you.

Grab Bars & Bathroom Safety

Grab bars, toilet safety rails, and non-slip surfaces make the bathroom — often the most hazardous room in the home — significantly safer. Many clients add these at the same time as a stair lift.

Frequently asked questions about stair lifts

By Michael Chandler, Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS)

How long does stair lift installation take?

Most straight stair lift installations take three to five hours from start to finish. Curved staircase installations are more complex and typically take a full day. We clean up completely before we leave.

Will a stair lift fit my staircase?

Stair lifts work on nearly any staircase — straight, curved, narrow, or outdoor. During your free in-home assessment we measure every dimension, check the rail path, and confirm the best model for your specific stairs before any work begins.

Very occasionally, a staircase is too steep or too narrow for any standard stair lift model. In that situation, we will tell you honestly and discuss alternatives such as a vertical platform lift or residential elevator.

Can I rent a stair lift instead of buying one?

Yes. Short-term rental and rent-to-own options are available and can make sense for post-surgery recovery or when long-term needs are uncertain. We walk you through both options with no pressure so you can choose what fits your situation.

What happens if the power goes out?

Every stair lift we install includes a battery backup system. If the power goes out, the lift continues to operate normally on battery power so you are never stranded on the stairs.

The battery recharges automatically whenever the lift is parked at a charging point at either end of the staircase. In normal use, the battery stays topped off at all times.

Does Medicare pay for stair lifts?

Original Medicare generally does not cover stair lifts. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited home-safety benefits — check your specific plan. VA HISA grants can help veterans with medically necessary home modifications. Texas Medicaid STAR+PLUS HCBS waiver may also cover eligible modifications. We are happy to help you sort through your options.

We help with paperwork; this is not medical, legal, or financial advice — verify current program details with the relevant agency.

See our full funding guide for a plain-English overview of all the programs that may apply.

Is my home's electrical system compatible?

Most stair lifts require a standard 120-volt household outlet near the staircase. We assess your electrical situation during the in-home visit and coordinate any needed outlet installation so the whole project is handled in one process.

We work with licensed electricians when an outlet needs to be added and include that coordination in our project management — you do not have to track down a separate contractor.

Do you install stair lifts near me in Austin, Georgetown, or the Hill Country?

Yes. We serve the entire Austin metro, Hill Country, and Central Texas — including Georgetown, Sun City, Lakeway, Dripping Springs, Canyon Lake, Marble Falls, Kerrville, New Braunfels, Seguin, and many communities in between. If you are within our service area, we come to your home for a free in-home assessment. Call (512) 797-6518 to confirm we cover your address.

See our full list of service areas to find the page for your community.

How is a stair lift different from a home elevator or platform lift?

A stair lift carries a seated rider along a rail on the existing staircase — no shaft or major construction required. A residential elevator or vertical platform lift travels in a dedicated shaft and can accommodate a wheelchair without the rider needing to transfer to a seat. Stair lifts are generally more affordable and faster to install; elevators offer more accessibility for full-time wheelchair users. Our guide Stair Lift vs. Home Elevator covers the key differences in cost, space, and long-term value. We install residential elevators and platform lifts as well, so we can help you choose the right solution.

Ready to make your stairs safe again?

A free in-home assessment is the first step. We come to you, measure your staircase, listen to your situation, and give you a clear picture of your options — including a fixed-price quote with no obligation. Most families tell us the assessment itself was worth the call, even if they weren't sure they were ready to move forward.
